Patricia Ruggiero

Postdoctoral Team

Patricia Ruggiero has a bachelor in Biology from where she started her interdisciplinary path as a professional and researcher. After her master in Ecology, she joined conservation efforts working in the private sector, the Ministry of the Rural Development (Federal Government) and in NGOs implementing different strategies for conservation between 2000 and 2010. She experienced how politics, social demands and policy design are intertwined as well as the challenges of implementing policies in practice. Triggered by the fact that conservation strategies success depends on the regional and local contexts, she went back to academia in 2014 to a doctoral course focused on the impact of conservation public policies. Patricia started her PhD at the Department of Ecology at the University of São Paulo but gradually moved towards economics and public policy departments as she realized economic theories and econometric methods are powerful tools to understand the use of natural resources and to conceive conservation strategies. Patricia nurtured very productive research collaborations at FEA (USP) and at the Sanford School of Public Policy (Duke University), where she developed part of her doctoral thesis. As a scientist and a Brazilian citizen, her major goal is to promote the understanding and advancement of formulation, evaluation and improvement of environmental policies to contribute to biodiversity conservation and the development of her country, and if possible to our unique planet.
